Web Design Isn't Internet Marketing
and It Won't Enhance Your Business —
It Could, in Fact, Lead to Ruining It!
One of the most critical factors in your business is a marketing presence, which is not the same as a website that just sits there—at best generating traffic but not yielding the sales you expect. Let me give you two scenarios that illustrate this difference:
Scenario 1
Let’s liken standard web design, and brochure-style websites with SEO, to having a store in a shopping centre. There are lots of people (traffic) in a shopping center, but the costs to be there are high and a lot of people go out of business if they get a low visitor-to-sales ratio or, heaven forbid, a high visitor rate that still results in low sales—which often is the result of NOT having a marketing funnel in place.
On the internet side of this analogy, the only benefit is the padding of your web designer’s bank account ... NOT YOURS!!!
Scenario 2
A marketing presence, on the other hand, looks like this: You walk into a store and don’t necessarily buy anything, but the sales process, psychological triggers, service and education you get make such an impression on you that you go away thinking, "WOW! That was one really neat experience." And you can’t help telling 2 to 10 friends about it!
You might be thinking, “Woop-di-doo.” But hold on for a second. Let’s take a look at what just happened in scene 2:
- You were "pre-sold" by being educated about some key ideas, without any hype or pressure to buy
- You liked the company just because of how you were treated
- Your trust level went through the roof just on the basis of the treatment
- The idea "I need this product or service" has been planted in your psyche, and it puts you into a trance-like buying state
- As you tell your friends about the experience you begin selling yourself on the product or service
- Your visit to that store left you far more educated, knowledgeable and confident about your situation than you were before
Then, just as you're beginning to forget the marvelous experience you had a few days back, you get a piece of information in your letterbox or email from the company (that you asked them to send—so there’s not the stigma of a cold approach; you actually welcome it!) and this time the information builds on what you received during your initial visit to the store.
Now, at this point you're probably ready to research the issue further on the company website. But something interrupts you. You put the marketing piece aside and move on to the next event in your life … for the moment.
Three or four days later you receive a free-gift certificate and some additional information about your chosen item or service, but this time there’s a time limit for redeeming the certificate. Now you're really keen to go back to the store, or to at least call them up and ask a few questions.
But here's the real kicker...
When you do call, and all your questions are politely answered and you get "educated" some more (by now you really, really, trust them), you are asked, “Who else might like to know what we’ve been telling you?" And they add, “If you can help us with a few referrals we can help you with an extra X% added to gift certificate you have in your hand right now.”
At this point it’s just TOO MUCH for you to resist. You gladly succumb and then go to the store and make the purchase you were considering in the first place, and maybe even more.
So what just happened?
A three way win-win-win that spreads like a virus:
- You win because you get the product or service you really wanted
- Your friends win because they’ve been referred to a business you trust; and they can expect that their interests will be looked after by the business
- The business wins because they have one happy customer and new warm leads
What I’ve just walked you through is a very simple and elementary sales funnel; a gradual, step-by-step process that turns a cold client into a hot lead and then into a sale in a gentle and compelling way.
You hold an audience by educating through communication, which creates a viral-like atmosphere that is your marketing presence.
The “Crunch” That Woke Me Up
I was working in a mid-size company which had a lot of very large government clients who'd been dealing with the company for many years. I tendered one of the multitude of tenders I would put out and fully expected (as usual) to win it. But I began to worry after not only one, but two, then three days passed without a response (this was a client who almost always accepted my tenders within one or two days).
I gave the client a call and was put through to the purchasing manager, with whom I thought I had a very good relationship. But I was met with dismal news!
"Adam,” the purchasing manager said, “We regret to tell you that we’ve chosen to go with company X. They’ve been educating us thoroughly on this next project over the last 3 months and we believe they have the goods this time around." That was it!
I was shell-shocked and awed by the fact that a much, much smaller company could have done such irreparable damage to the large company I was working for. CRUNCH!!!
Had I known of the massive impact good marketing and educational systems could have, I wouldn’t have had to go through that extremely painful (yet powerful) lesson. But after that day (which happened some seven years ago) I began researching and studying marketing, and eventually got to work for a modern day marketing master who knows how to promote and educate online and in person.
